Asphalt vs. Concrete Driveway in Westchester, NY: Which Is Better?

By Cristian Poblete, Licensed Contractor WC-34542-H21 · Ossining, NY · June 2026

Both materials work in Westchester — but they have different strengths, costs, and maintenance needs. Here's an honest comparison.

Freeze-Thaw Performance

Asphalt is flexible and handles freeze-thaw cycles better than concrete. When water freezes in a crack in asphalt, it expands but the material gives slightly. Concrete is rigid — water expanding in cracks causes spalling and pitting. Both require proper base preparation (6" compacted gravel minimum) to minimize heave.

Road Salt Note

Westchester roads use significant road salt in winter. Salt accelerates concrete deterioration — the magnesium chloride used widely in NY is particularly aggressive. Concrete driveways that get salt tracked in from cars need more frequent sealing. Asphalt is more salt-tolerant.

Making the Right Choice for Your Situation

There's rarely a single "best" answer in these comparisons — the right choice depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay in your home, your tolerance for maintenance, and the specific conditions of your property. A material that's ideal for a sun-exposed deck in one part of Westchester may not be the best choice for a shaded, north-facing installation in the river towns. Understanding the tradeoffs lets you make a decision you'll be happy with for years.

The biggest mistake we see homeowners make is optimizing only for upfront cost without considering the total cost of ownership. A cheaper option that needs replacement or significant maintenance sooner often costs more over a ten-year horizon than a more expensive option that lasts. We walk through these tradeoffs at every estimate so you can weigh them against your actual plans.

Get a Recommendation Based on Your Property

Generic advice only goes so far. The best recommendation comes from someone who has seen your specific space — your exposure, your existing conditions, and your goals. We provide that assessment free as part of every estimate, with honest guidance on which option makes the most sense for your situation rather than which one is most expensive.
